Richardson Apartments, 2012 Recipient, AIA/HUD Secretary’s Awards

Drs. Julian & Raye Richardson Apartments

The Richardson Apartment complex is a low-income development located two blocks from San Francisco’s City Hall. The units are primarily reserved for people transitioning from homelessness. This last fact led to an innovative agreement with the city; the usual code requirement for parking was reduced because those transitioning from homelessness are less likely to own a car. This allowed for a larger footprint on the lot as well as for increased street-level business or retail space.

The developer of the project is Mercy Housing California Community Housing Partnership and the architect is David Baker + Partners Architects.
